![]() ADF Peace Ambassador Program - South AfricaADF is proposing a 14-day Youth Ambassador education project to the Republic of South Africa in 2005. Children are being identified as candidates to represent Southern California to assist us in developing increased international communication and understanding through an academic, art, and cultural exchange. Attendees will participate in classes, workshops and presentations in the area of leadership development, peace, nonviolence, reconciliation, and peace building. In June 2003 ADF visited Johannesburg and co-hosted a successful international peace conference with the King-Luthuli Transformation Centre and the South African Council of Churches, hence the July 2004 Youth Ambassador project will establish another opportunity for us to commit to the educational and social development of youth leadership in Johannesburg, South Africa. Thus, in Johannesburg the youth will study the history and culture of South Africa with a focus on youth leadership, conduct two seminars concerning new technology and the importance of building peace and advancing the ideals of nonviolence and reconciliation, and host a mid-study reception to inform local participants of their goals and objectives and impressions since their arrival. Secondly, the youth will visit and record their study via video or a journal to the MuseumAfrica, the Lesedi Cultural Village where they can spend the night with local families, the Phumangena Zulu Kraal where they can watch and participate in a traditional Zulu dance and meal, University of Witwatersrand, the City of Johannesburg public library, the King-Luthuli Transformation Centre, the South African Council of Churches, the Intel Clubhouse, the Gold Reef City where they can go down an old mine shaft and watch molten gold being poured, the Market Theatre Complex of theatres, restaurants and an art gallery, the Santarama Miniland miniature city, and the park surrounding Zoo Lake. Before their return, the youth will send or broadcast their Findings on the Web to their parents, friends and those who supported of the project. Upon their return, the youth will stay in touch with their new friends In Johannesburg via the Web or video-conferencing, and host a multi-media public reception to outline what they learned about the youth, history, culture and arts of South Africa during their study and how the study has impacted their understanding and communication with people in another part of the world. The success of this project will be measured in the documentation collected and presented. We are planning an orientation meeting to discuss
this opportunity in more detail with the public and potential sponsors.
